Recognised as one of Europe’s top 100 courses, Modry Las Golf Club of Choszczno, Poland, has started the new golfing season on a high after receiving a pair of awards honouring the remarkable layout of the Gary Player-designed course. The double celebration follows a short-listing for the prestigious Golf Inc 2010 Development of the Year Award which celebrates the very best international golf courses.

“We have collected a number of accolades so far and were especially pleased to make the finals of the Golf Inc awards,” commented Arthur Gromadzki, chairman of Modry Las. “To start the 2011 season with two more awards is fantastic, and I think these are especially important as they have been voted by Polish golfers.”

In a poll organised by Poland’s leading golf website, Polishgolf.pl, Modry Las picked up the award for the most spectacular hole – the par three fifteenth, recently named Player’s Prize. Achieving nearly a third of the entire vote, this beguiling hole captures the imagination of everyone who plays it with a tee shot over water to a green protected by an imposing lake-side bunker.

“It’s a challenge for an experienced golfer but also a pleasure for an amateur,” noted one voter. “Hard, short and beautiful,” said another, while one golfer admitted the very thought of the hole “freezes the blood in my veins”. Modry Las was also runner-up in three other categories: Best Golf Course, Most Demanding Golf Course and Best Greenkeeping and Maintenance.

In another poll, this one taken amongst users of Golfmedia.pl – a leading golf portal –Modry Las was selected as the Polish club at which they most enjoyed playing golf. “Modry Las is one of the most beautiful and challenging golf courses in Poland,” the website noted. “Now with your votes, it has been selected as the most popular.”

As the course enters its second full year of operation, Gromadzki indicated that further developments are being planned. “Modry Las is a long-term project which is very much in its early stages,” he said. “We will continue to refine and improve the golf course, but we are also keen to explore other ways of enhancing the golfing experience at Modry Las and encouraging more people to take up the sport. This will form a large part of our new clubhouse which is currently being built, but we are also looking to maximise the land to its fullest potential in due course.”
